Q&A: What is so bad about fried food?

This question comes up frequently. Many new weight loss surgery patients are of the impression that they can eat whatever they want -- just less of it. But many of us learn the hard way that some foods just don't work for us after weight loss surgery. Here is the question and my answer about fried food that we originally published in the April 13, 2011 LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest. You can enjoy

Pasta with Tomatoes & Goat Cheese

Please enjoy this recipe from the LivingAfterWLS Newsletter Archives:

I think we are all familiar with classic macaroni, pasta or potato salads that are heavy on starch and light on vegetables or complex carbohydrates. While no doubt these are enjoyable to eat they leave us feeling heavy, sleepy, and bloated. In many cases they lead to discomfort and possibly dumping in gastric surgery

Lemon Chicken Soup: Comforting & Delicious

I found this recipe in Prevention magazine and was intrigued by the addition of two eggs at the end of cooking. This method is similar to egg drop soup but I had never considered adding an egg to a more hearty soup. The result was a fresh and light chicken soup with a creamy texture thanks to the addition of eggs. Each 2-cup standard serving has 49g protein so a WLS portion of 1-cup has about 25g

Don't Stress Over Carbs & Still Lose Weight

Are you confused about the role of carbohydrates in your post-Weight Loss Surgery diet? You are not alone. Of the three food nutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates) carbs confuse us the most. Even the bariatric professionals cannot agree on the role of carbohydrate in the high protein diet most commonly prescribed to patients of gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding (lap-band) and gastric

Cottage Cheese Crab Salad

This salad is quick and delicious. There are two ingredients my husband refuses to eat: cottage cheese and sour cream. Funny thing, he ate two servings of this salad saying it was 5-Star top-notch delicious! HA!! I'll never tell.

I used plum tomatoes, the only fresh fruit I could find this time of year. The seeds and membrane were bitter so I seeded them and sprinkled a pinch of sugar on the

Better Than Green Bean Casserole

A couple of years ago I came across this recipe in Vegetarian Times and served it for Thanksgiving in place of traditional green bean casserole - you know the one with the canned soup and canned fried onions. This dish is so delicious and such a crowd pleaser I have been making it ever since. Here is the recipe direct from Vegetarian Times -- I hope it finds a way to your holiday table this year!

Holiday Pies: What Every Weight Loss Surgery Patient Should Know

By Kaye Bailey
We all know we shouldn't reach for the holiday pie after Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) - it's against the rules and the potential to make us sick is very high. If that's not enough to motivate restraint how about considering the nutrient analysis of some favorite American pies. Take a look and see if it is really worth it to taste that full-fat, full-sugar dessert:

Hello Neighbors! In my part of the world the raspberries are in harvest - oh what a beautiful day! Nature's rubies. Raspberries are a great source of Vitamin C, fiber, and pectin that is known to lower cholesterol.
